Álamo

The Álamo sits in the heart of downtown San Antonio, and is one of the top tourist destinations in the state of Texas.  The complex of The Álamo today is confined to roughly a square city block.  Although not a large mission, the original grounds were many times larger.

It is sometimes hard to remember that by the time the Battle of the Alamo took place, this mission was over 120 years old.  The roof of the chapel had already been destroyed, as had some of the surrounding walls.  It was not in any shape to withstand an assault by the large force that faced the Tejanos.
