Descendants of Ingeborg
Fredriksdatter Mundale
Generation No. 1
1.
Ingeborg Fredriksdatter6 Mundale (Fredrik Pedersen Vangsnes5
Mundal, Per Bendiksen4 Vangsnes, Bendik Olsson3, Ola
Pederson2, Per1 Brekke) was born January 06, 1849 in
Mundal, Fjaerland, Balestrand fylke, Sogn district, Norway, and died December
13, 1925 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN.
She married Christian Gunnerius Larsen Lillestrand July 07, 1877
in Elk Grove Lutheran Church, Northwood, Worth County, IA, son of Lars
Lillestrand and Kristine Gulbrandsdatter.
He was born February 06, 1854 in Maridalen, Norway, and died February
20, 1938 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN.
Notes
for Ingeborg Fredriksdatter Mundale:
The
following information, primarily provided by Kay A. (Lillestrand) Leahy,
appeared in the 1975 edition of the Mundale-Mondale Clan by Lester and Maria
Mondale:
Ingebrog Fredricksdatter Mundale (oldest
child of Frederick) was born in Norway, 6 JAN 1849, in the district of Bergen,
probably in the vacinity of Vangsnes, Sogn.
Her mother's maiden name was Martha Lidal.
From Kay Leahy: "The story my mother
(Elizabeth Christensen Lillestrand) remembers Grandma "Emma"
(Ingeborg) telling about her birth is that her father was from royalty and her
mother was not, so they were forbidden to marry. Her mother (Martha Lidal) was apparently a very beautiful girl
and person. ...My mother (Elizabeth Lillestrand) thinks that Ingeborg came to
the United States with her father (Frederick Person Vangsnes) and the rest of
his other family, Brita, Frederick, Ole and Hans in 1856." (Brita took Ingeborg into her household and
cared for her as one of her own.)
"(Ingeborg) spoke of a half-brother
in Norway, on her mother's side. This
makes me think that she was with her mother until just before she came over
here. If she were seven, she would have
been old enough to remember her mother and brother. She said that her father always claimed her as his child but if
he were of royal blood, maybe he couldn't have her with him until he did come
to the United States."
"Ingeborg was a quiet and reserved
person with an air of aristocracy; she was also a very loving person. My mother (Elizabeth Lillestrand) said she
was an ideal mother-in-law, a good cook, and was always one to help in times of
illness. She had home remedies that my mother still uses today (item written
about 1974). My remembrance of her is
of someone I dearly loved amd who dearly loved me" (p. 25).

Burial
info from Earl Lillestrand info received 2 APR 2000.
Earl
H. Lillestrand 18 MAY 2000 in correspondence dated 11 MAY 2000, corrected place
of birth and noted that Fylke=county.
Earl
notes that Ingeborg was delivered in Mundal and baptized there by her father,
Fredrik. Earl believes the fact that
Ingeborg was born and baptized in Mundal was suppressed for many years, but he
didn't elaborate on that point. He said it is unclear how long Martha
Jonsdatter Lidal stayed after the child was born; it seems likely that Ingeborg
stayed in Mundal until the family emigrated in 1856. The family migrated to the Scandanavian-like frontier of
Wisconsin, settling in Puckawa, Marquette County, on the banks of the Fox
River.
Five years later, the family would move to
SE Minnesota. Little is known about
Ingeborg until her marriage (See notes on marriage.).

The plots for Christian and Ingeborg are
in Section I. (The owner of their lot is listed as Louis Lillestrand--Earl's
dad. Earl said that when Ingeborg died,
his dad only had money for one plot.
Christian raised quite a fuss about only buying one plot, and it appears
that Louis did buy the other plot shortly after Ingeborg was buried.)

the SE corner of the section. Walk 8

Notes
for Christian Gunnerius Larsen Lillestrand:
Lillestrand
was a family name assumed by Christian Larson.
In an E-mail from Madeline Gallup (received 22 APR 2000), Lars Larson
Lillestrand may have been the first to use Lillestrand. Lillestrand means "Little
Shore." The homestead where
Christian was born now lays in ruins.
The foundation of the house was still visible, and a milkhouse was still
standing in 1970s.
In
correspondence dated 11 MAY 2000. Earl Lillestrand notes that Christian
Gunnerius Larsen did not adopt the gardsnavn (farm name) at the same time as
the others in the family did. Because
he was unaware of the difference, he did not find his name when searching
records. He continues to look into the
matter.
DOB
of 6 FEB 1854 received from Earl H. Lillestrand 14 SEPT 2000; DOD 20 FEB 1938,
same source.
Burial
at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis confirmed by Earl Lillestrand in letter
dated 28 AUG 2000. DOD from same note. Earl incorrectly notes that the graves
are not contiguous. At the time
Ingeborg died, Christian Lillestrand had neither money nor insurance--Earl says
his dad was "Lucky Pierre"; he was barely able to scrape together
enough for a minimal funeral. Only one
lot could be purchased with Ingeborg died, something Christian Lillestrand was
very displeased about, and another bought at the time Christian, himself, died.
From
notes on FAMILY GROUP SHEET received from Earl H. Lillestrand 14 SEPT 2000:
Little is known about Christian's boyhood
at Lillestrand (a farm on the eastern shore of Maridalsvatnet--Mary's Valley
Lake--on the outskirts of Christiana (now Oslo), Norway. It's a good bet that Christian worked as a
farmhand as well as learning the skills of a millwright (as his father was the
manager of a saw mill). At 15,
Christian accompanied his step-mother, sister Caroline and half-brother Herman
to the US, debarking in Quebec and meeting up with his father and sister
Karen. While the other members of the
family appear on the 1870 Census for Madison Township in IA, Christian does
not. It is believed that he married
Ingeborg Fredriksdatter Mundale in Decorah, IA. It is known that he made two failed attempts at homesteading in
the vacinity of what is now Bottineau, ND before settling in Minneapolis, MN,
where he worked as a carpenter.

Note:
According to info from Earl, it appears that Christian married Ingeborg while
using Larsen as his last name; only later did he adopt Lillestrand as his
father and siblings had. Earl suspects
that Christian entered the USA either as a stowaway or as a disserter (after
hiring on as part of ship's crew).

Marriage
Notes for Ingeborg Mundale and Christian Lillestrand:
On 2
JUN 2001, while visiting with Earl H. Lillestrand in MN, he mentioned that he
suspected our mutual ancestor, Christian Lillestrand, had married using the
name Larsen. It is known that Christian
started using Lillestrand after he entered the US, much later than did his father
and siblings. Following up on that
suspicion, I found the following:
Ancestry.com,
Iowa Marriages, 1851-1900, 17 JUN 2001:
Name:
LARSEN, CHRISTIAN
Spouse:
FREDRICKSDATER, INGEBER
Marriage
Date: 23 Jun 1877
County:
Worth
State: IA
The
previous listing for this marriage was: 1876 in Decorah, Winneshiek County,
IA. Decorah would be about 60 miles
east of the county seat of Worth County (Northwood). And it is a pretty fair distance to travel back in the late
1870s.
On
28 JUL 2001, At the Mundale-Mondale Reunion, Frost, Faribault County, MN, Earl
Lillestrand showed me the Worth County Marriage record for Christian Larsen and
Ingeborg Fredricksdater. The name
Mundahl was written above Ingeborg's name at the end of the space for her
name. Earl also tracked down the church
records for the now defunct Elk Grove Lutheran Church, Northwood, Worth County,
IA. The records were in Norwegian.
Worth
Marriage Register Book 1 #368 Date of License: 23 JUN 1877; Date of Marriage 7
JUL 1877; Return of Certificate: 9 JUL 1877; solemnized by LUTHERAN MINISTER.
Elk
Grove Lutheran Church (Northwood, Worth County, IA) Record. Anno 188 (unclear
what this date indicates): #9, Dare:
7/7 Names of Groom and Bride: Christian Larsen and Ingeborg Mundal; Ages: 23
and 27*; Groom's Parents: Lars Larsen and Christine Gulbrandt; Bride's Parents:
Fredrik Pedersen and Martha Johnsdatter.
*If
age is correct, Ingeborg would have been born in 1850 instead of 1849.
(The
following is based on notes received from Earl Lillestrand, 7 AUG 2001.) After
Christian and Ingeborg married, there is no clear record of their
movements. Earl Lillestrand now thinks
his father, Louis, the couple's oldest child, was born in Northwood, Worth
County, IA. If true, the couple was in northern IA for at least one year. They moved north to Bricelyn by 17 OCT 1880,
where their second child, Karl, was born.
Between Karl's birth and 1882, the family moved to the area near Bottineau,
ND, where Christian tried to homestead.
Minnie (Wilhemina) was born 31 JAN 1883--probably in MN. So, it is assumed that the farm failed and
they returned to the east. It is known
that the family moved to Mankato, MN by 1888.
A picture of Minnie and her mother, known as Emma, was taken there, as
was the last of the children, Arthur, on 26 JAN 1888. Christian used Minnie's name to obtain a second homestead in
ND. But that venture, too, appears to
have failed. The family would
eventually move to Minneapolis where Christian worked as a carpenter.

While
some of the information found in the descendant listings for Karl Lillestrand
comes from the works of Lester and Maria Mondale and a follow up from Earl H.
Lillestrand (3 APR 2000), most of the information found here comes from
individuals within this line of the family.
Contributions of specific individuals has been referenced in the notes
below.
From
Earl H. Lillestrand, received 14 SEPT 2000: Karl Lillestrand received only 4
years of formal schooling, but became quite well-read. When he was a lad, a doctor friend of the
family wanted to take Karl on as an apprentice, but his mother thought him too
young to leave home. Karl worked as a
farmer most of his life.
Gene
Pool Records, Ancestry.com, accessed 21 SEPT 2000 gives place of death as Lake
Minnetonka, MN.
The
following brief description of Karl Lillestrand was received from his daughter,
Betty Daniels, 21 NOV 2000: "He was a very hard working man and had a
fruit farm and always had a large garden at the place at the lake (Lake
Minnetonka) in Mound, MN. His education
was limited, but he was so well read and aware of everything. He realized the importance of a good
education and always encouraged us and was able to help us with our school
work. He had Rheumatic Fever as a child
which left him with a bad heart. He
died at the age of 59."

Born 13 Nov 1895
Died 5 Jan 1995 Issued: MN (Before 1951)
According
to Kay Leahy, Henry Gosch, Jr., was guardian to all of the Christensen girls.
Elizabeth
Christensen went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Friis in Lake Benton, MN.
Andrew
Friis was an uncle to Hans Friis Christensen (the brother of his mother, Marie
Dorthea Friis).
Jørn
Frost-Knudsen (in information received 30 JUN 2000) writes: "For many
years there was no contact among the six girls, except for Elizabeth and Marie
Dorothy. They met at least once a year
when the Friis siblings met at Søren Mikkelsen's in Tyler, MN for Christmas.
Sometimes Lizzie also spent summers in Tyler.
At the age of 18, she moved away from the Friis family and finally finds
out where her other sisters lived."
Elizabeth
(Christensen) Lillestrand married Irel G. Vant in 1945, after the death of her
first husband, Karl Bernard Lillestrand (1942). And she was known to my brothers and sisters and me as Gramma
Vant. Gramma Vant was fun. She enjoyed life and she wanted everyone
around her to enjoy it, too.
When I was very little, the family packed
up for two weeks in the summer and headed for Minneapolis. Back then, Irel Vant was still working (he
ran a trucking company), and he got up early.
Gramma got up even earlier to get breakfast going for him. All of us kids would be asleep in the living
room. Gramma would make her way into
the kitchen and turn the light on over the sink. Then she would turn the tap on the get water for coffee. That was my cue to get up. I would step over brothers and sisters and
make my way to the kitchen, and I would watch Gramma chop potatoes and cook
pork chops or bacon. When the coffee
was ready, she would give each of us some in a big mug. And we would sit and watch the sky brighten
and drink our coffee. We whispered
some, but not much, because Gramma didn't want us to wake anybody else up--although
I don't know how any of them slept through frying bacon and percolating
coffee. Once Grampa Vant got up,
everyone else did, too. Grampa Vant
didn't know how to do things quietly....
Gramma Vant's two major cooking tasks for
us were lefse and her little dinner rolls.
I'm afraid the secret to her dinner rolls left the earth with her. I've never been able to duplicate them, and
Jody tried to figure out the recipe by watching Gramma whip them up and was
never able to get the exact recipe.
After Grampa Vant retired, they travelled
more. And they played a lot of
cards. Thirty-one and cribbage were
favorites.
One of Gramma Vant's greatest abilities
was in sewing. She could whip out
dresses and shirts faster than anybody I ever saw. She made almost every dress I ever saw her wear until she was
well into her nineties.
In the last year or so of her life, I
think her biggest disappointment was her loss of sight. Not only because she could no longer see the
people around her, but because she could no longer work her word puzzles. When Gramma wasn't sewing or cooking, you
could pretty much bet she would have a puzzle book and a pencil in hand
(--RMLeahy).
From
Jody (Leahy Filipi): "I am not sure when I first heard the story about
Gramma Vant's dad. All I know is that
it was one of the things that made me see Grandma as a true survivor... not
just physically, but emotionally, spiritually and all ways, she seemed to be
able to rise above what ever circumstances life sent her way." (Received

Notes
for Katherine Alvina Lillestrand:
Personal
knowledge and Omaha World Herald obit.
The
Kay Leahy I remember was hard working and willing to help anyone and everyone
in any way she could. She worried about
others far more than she worried about herself. One of the projects she became quite involved in after her husband
died was the funeral support services of her church. At the time of her husband's death, the church did not provide as
much support to the families as it does now, and I think my mother would be
proud of the difference she made in that area of the church's ministry.
In the kitchen, Mom was a gadget
person. I once told her I was going to
invent the electric fork for her, which I thought was hysterically funny at the
time (I think I was a freshman in High School--so I was pretty impressed with
everything I did then). She didn't
think much of that idea, but she did like her other toys: She had special
dishes for every conceivable kind of food preparation, and mechanical devices
to help with the same. There was the
noodle maker and salad spinner, the electric juicer, the dehydrater, the magic
meal sealer.... And all of the toys
were marvelous to behold, but they sure took up a lot of room in the
kitchen. When I came home from college
on breaks, the counters would be covered with the contraptions. And, I would make the mistake of putting
them away. The next morning, she needed
almost everything brought back out for some project or another. What she needed was a bigger kitchen. If she had had the space, I think my mother
would have gladly catered any function anyone wanted to put on. Mom's forte was dessert: cookies, cakes and
pastries (we won't mention the prune torte, as every cook is entitled to a few
items that don't quite make the grade...).
The one thing I would have wished for Mom
was more forgiving sense of self. She
didn't share my dad's ability to find humor in the things she did. That may be my remembering her more after
Dad died that before. I don't think she
was ever really happy after Dad died (--RMLeahy).

Notes
for Dr. James Joseph Leahy:
Personal
knowledge and Omaha World Herald obit.
The
James Leahy I remember was a passionate man with many diverse interests. In football, he liked the Green Bay Packers
and the Chicago Bears and, of course, the Fighting Irish of the University of
Notre Dame. And he disliked teams with
an equal intensity, such as the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. We had a natural rivalry with the
Cornhuskers. He always told me I didn't
know any better. And I always rooted
against the Bears just to give him a hard time. It was more fun to watch a game when we didn't root for the same
teams.
When I was in high school, Dad and I, and
Gramma Vant, when she was in town, would often share a late night cup of coffee
and maybe something to go with it (especially when Gramma Vant was in
town). We would half-listen to the news
and Johnny Carson, and talk. The one
thing I learned from him is that nothing should be taken too seriously. That philosophy probably explains why he was
so gentle and compassionate. And why he
could laugh at himself with such ease.
And those are the qualities in him I most admire and try (yes, I do try)
to emulate.
Dad said the Irish like to tease those
they love. And he liked to tease all of
his children and his wife and his parents and in-laws. He always did it with a twinkle in his eye. And I think he hoped we would learn to laugh
at ourselves, too (--RMLeahy).

Lillestrand-Leahy
The Post Chapel at Fort Sam Houston, Texas
was the scene of a very pretty wedding Saturday, August 10 [1946], when at
10:30 Major McEnirny, Chaplain of the Medical Corps of the 9th Army, read the
rites in which Miss Katherine Lillestrand, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. J. M.
(sic, I. G.) Vant of Minneapolis, became the bride of Lt. James J. Leahy, son
of Sr. and Mrs. J. D. Leahy of this city.
To the strains of the Lohengrin Wedding
March the bride approached the altar on the arm of Mr. Vant who gave her in
marriage. She was attired in an Autralian green suit with a hat and veil
to match and her flowers were white orchids.
Mrs. I. J. Laconik served as the matron of
honor for the bride. She was attired in
a deep purple suit with a hat to match and wore lavender orchids.
Lt. Leahy selected Lt. I. J. Laconik, a
classmate at Notre Dame, as his best man and guests were ushered to their
places by Lts. George Porter and Thomas Boldt.
On the main altar, before which the double
ring service was read, were large vases of white asters, white gladioli, and
tuberoses and huge baskets of the same flowers were on either side of the chancel
rail. During the ceremony, a soloist
sang Schubert's "Ave Maria" and the organ played softly throughout
the service.
After the ceremony, the bridal party
proceeded to the Mangor Hotel, where the young couple received the
congratulations of their friends. At
noon, a wedding breakfast was served to 20 guests in the Rennaissance
Room. The breakfast table was
beautifully decorated with white
flowers, huge silver candelabra with white tapers and as a cenbterpiece, a
large wedding cake.
Mrs. Leahy is a graduate of St. Andrew's
Hospital, Minneapolis, and spent a year and a half at Wesley Hospital in
Chicago before entering service as a Lieutenant in the ANC. She was in service sixteen months, fourteen
of which were spent overseas, and returned from France the latter part of June,
when she received her discharge.
Lt. leahy is a graduate of St. Thomas
Military Academy, receiving his bachelor of Science degree from Notre Dame and
his Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern.
He is now stationed temporarily at Brooks General Hospital, Fort Sam
Houston, and the young couple will reside in San Antonio until Lt. Leahy
receives a new assignment.

IN
MEMORIUM
James
David Leahy, M.D. (1948-1999)
On
October 15, 1999, the Medical Missions Foundation lost a loyal and valuable
member of its surgical team, Dr. Jim Leahy. It was a sudden and shocking loss,
for he was such a young, dedicated and talented physician.
In
1996, Dr. Jim Leahy was the only plastic surgeon on the Foundation's inaugural
medical mission to the Philippines. Dr. Leahy not only reconstructed birth
defects in poverty-stricken children, he performed the best possible operations
for the best possible results. Again in 1997 and 1998, the children of
Guatemala and Vietnam respectively were the recipients of his care and
attention. As we go to Bohol, Philippines on November 4, 1999, we will miss him
deeply.
Jim's
dedication to his family and his work had far-reaching implications. He brought
his son, Paul, now a medical student at KU medical Center, on both Medical
Missions Foundation's Missions, instilling in him his own selfless, caring
nature. Jim was a fun person to be with and a marvel to work with," Armi
Holcomb, R. N. recalls. "Jim stayed past midnight to care for a Filipino
girl after surgery, missing an official party given in our honor."
Dr.
John Romito, another member of the team remembers Jim, "He was a sincere,
giving, caring, and devoted person. He always prepared himself well for his
patients' care."
Upon
his passing, Jim's wife, Margie, sons Paul, Scott and Eric, and
daughter-in-law, Jami, designated the Medical Missions Foundation as a
recipient of memorials in lieu of flowers. The donations will be matched by the
Foundation to create an endowment fund known as "The James D. Leahy, M.
D., Travel Grant Fund." Proceeds from the fund will allow nurses to attend
future missions to the impoverished countries that Jim visited and served.
Donations are still being accepted for this Fund.
